Artarmon Library repoens with fanfare

Artarmon Branch Library reopened on November 2 with much fanfare, attended by more than 400 local residents, Willoughby City councillors, WCC GM Nick Tobin, local NSW MP Gladys Berejiklian and former Mayoress Janette Warner and her son Stuart.

The eight councillors present and librarian Suzanne Cavanagh joined forces and cut the ribbon together (see picture this page).

Janette shares a long history with the former church, her father JC Brodie having gifted the bell tower in 1948. She told the gathering she also got married there in 1949 to David Warner, former Willoughby alderman and mayor in 1973-74.

The Warner family was also heavily involved in the church (see Nov 2009 Gazette, p6).

As part of the opening, Janette and Stuart presented Mayor Pat Reilly with a painting of David Warner to be hung in the library.

A particularly poignant moment was when the former Willoughby Mayoress and widow of David Warner, mayor 1973-74, and Mayor Pat Reilly cut the celebratory cake together.

In his speech, the Mayor said: “The restoration and reuse of the church is part of Council’s commitment to provide quality community learning facilities throughout the LGA.”

The APA heritage committee had prepared a display of the building’s history and the people involved over the years.

Suzanne said the relocation of 10,000 books and 1,500 AV items and more between August 18 and September 10 had gone smoothly thanks to the professional skills of “team Willoughby” after several successful library moves.

“There has only been praise for the wonderful new location. Natural light streams in; all the new technology works effortlessly; there are exclamations of joy at the extensive DVD collection, the self-check machine and free WiFi,” she said. “And how the children with parents enjoy their own area. More than 40 pre-schoolers enjoyed Christine’s first story time at the new premises on October 8.

“People have walked the 100m up Tindale Rd without heart failure and as one gentleman commented: “It seems to get shorter.

If you have not already visited the new library, please drop in and experience this new community facility at 139 Artarmon Rd.
