Branches knit, stitch for Wrap with Love

Artarmon and Northbridge knitters and friends came together on August 5, at Artarmon Library to create, connect and collaborate. Inspired by ABC 702 radio's annual knit-in for Wrap with Love, these communities have been knitting squares of all colours, patterns and expertise.

Between the Artarmon and Northbridge libraries, we completed more than 200 squares, crafted over the winter. Fortunately for the two busy librarians, help was on hand. We had about 30 eager craftspeople come by on the Friday morning to create ten beautiful rugs.

These women were amazing: straight into it - sorting wool from acrylic, pinks from blues, squares from - well, not-so-squares - and then stitching them together, sustained by a morning tea of fresh scones, jam and cream plus a lot of chatting and laughing.

These wraps are sent to the central Wrap with Love warehouse from where they are distributed throughout the world to those in need, including the Hamlin Fistula Hospitals in Ethiopia.

We heard how much appreciated these rugs are to the African women whose lives are transformed by a simple operation after childbirth Dr Catherine Hamlin has introduced.

These previously ostracised women are sent back to their villages with a new nightie, new headscarf and the most beautiful handmade rug, often the envy of their community, explained Alexandra from Hamlin Fistula® Relief and Aid Fund when she dropped in to our knit-in, giving special meaning to our efforts.

Thank you to all in our communities who helped out, whether knitting a row or two while at the libraries' storytime or completing a whole rug, as a number of clever knitters did. Go to for more information.
